What Shall I Do With This Jesus: The Nativity 2016 (Riverside)

A Riverside Christmas Celebration

On Sunday evening, December 18th, at 6 pm Riverside celebrated the birthday of our Savior. With the assistance of the adult choir, Riverside's youth and children's ministries presented our annual Christmas play. This year's play was entitled "What Shall I Do With This Jesus?: The Nativity".

The play showed the lives of each of the people that were involved in the birth of Jesus and how they had to make a choice as to how they would respond to Jesus – would they reject Him or accept Him? The guest narrator – the Apostle Paul – challenged the congregation to decide for themselves how they would answer the question -- "What Shall I Do With This Jesus? The Christmas play was actually Part One of a two-part play – the second part being the Passion of Christ, which will be performed on Easter Sunday. This year's play was unique in that it represented the first time that a live nativity scene was created as a part of the play – no real animals, but there was real hay

After the play, the church held its annual Christmas party in the fellowship hall. All in attendance enjoyed a time of good food and fellowship. The youth and children received presents from the church. Overall, the night was an excellent time of celebration for Jesus's birthday.

Sharing The Reason For The Season 2016 (Riverside)

Riverside Youth Hayride and Christmas Caroling

"And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled." Luke 14:23

On Saturday, December 2, members of our youth and adult choirs joined together with others members of the church to share the message of Christmas through song with our community. Our mode of transportation was an old fashion hayride -- or as old fashioned as we could get! We rode through the community singing Christmas carols. At houses where people would come out to listen to us, we gave out candy canes and invitations to our annual Christmas play. We had 19 young people and adults go on the hayride. After finishing the hayride, we got in pickup trucks, and went to several of our church shut-ins to share with them a little Christmas cheer.
When we returned to the church, we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows over a bonfire -- a perfect end to a perfect day of fun, food, and fellowship.

Fall In Love With Jesus (Riverside) 2016

Riverside Holds Annual Family Fest 2016

"I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it." John 17:14-16 (NIV)

While the rest of the world celebrates Halloween and the "evil one", Riverside chooses to promote Christ and our families by providing our families with a safe, Bible-based alternative to the holiday. It has become a tradition for us to gather at the church on October 31st to enjoy an evening of fun and fellowship – and of course food.

This year's Family Fest held extra meaning for our families due to the events that had occurred just a few weeks before. We had several families who were affected by Hurricane Matthew in some way – some felt the direct impacts of the flooding and other weather damage, some felt the impact indirectly through family member's damages, and all were impacted by the loss of utilities, the extended closure of the schools, and the overall stress a storm of this magnitude causes. So this year's Family Fest was meant to provide the families of our church with a time of refuge from the storm.

The theme of Family Fest 2016 was "Fall in Love With Jesus". The event had something for all ages. Most of the adults took the opportunity to talk and reflect on the events of the past weeks. They also participated in a "Guess the Candy Corn" game – the winner receiving the Mason jar full of candy corn they had been guessing about. The game also focused their attention on the colors of the candy and how it reflected the Trinity. For the youth and children, we set up several fall-themed carnival style games in the churchyard. The children were allowed to dress up in non-threatening costumes. After this time of fun, all were treated to a hearty spaghetti supper. The night concluded with a bonfire where we roasted marshmallow and made s'mores. All 69 of us (adults and children) who attended enjoyed this break from the stress as well as the fellowship with fellow believers.
