Riverside Celebrates Senior Appreciation and Old Fashion Day 2016

God stated in His word that we are supposed to show respect and appreciation to our elders --"'Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD." (Leviticus 19:32 NIV). With this in mind, Riverside set aside Sunday, September 11th as Senior Appreciation/Old Fashion Day. This day was created as a day to support, honor and show appreciation to our seniors and to recognize their valuable contributions to our church and community.

The church celebrated the day in many ways. Several dressed in clothes from years ago – men in bib overalls and suspenders and ladies in bonnets and aprons could be seen throughout the church. The adult choir honored our seniors with special music. Bro. Marvin challenged our seniors and the entire congregation from the Word. Then, everyone enjoyed a great lunch prepared by the ladies of the church. The day concluded with each senior being presented with a decorated candy jar full of "sweets for the sweet"! Overall, an excellent day of fun, food and fellowship honoring our seniors and our past.

Preacher Tell It Like It Is – Riverside Pastor Appreciation 2016

Sams-phone-pics-511 copyRiverside set aside Sunday August 21st 2016, as a day to honor our pastors – Rev. Marvin Locklear and Rev. Tom Morgan. Both pastors had members of their family in attendance to share this day with them. Brother Marvin was accompanied by his wife, Camalain, as well as other family members. Due to continued health restrictions, Brother Tom was unable to be with us; however, members of his family – his father, Muriel Morgan; his mother, Evelyn Morgan; and his sister, Jennifer Morgan -- represented him.

The day began with the youth and adult choirs honoring our pastors in song. Following the choirs, Brother Marvin preached the Word challenging all that were in attendance. After being feed spiritually, the congregation adjourned to the fellowship where we were feed physically. As usual, the ladies of the church went out of their way to prepare a feast in honor of our pastors. After the delicious meal, the church honored each preacher with small tokens of our appreciation and gratitude for their service to the church and to the Lord.

The youth and children of the church showed their appreciation to Brother Marvin through the pictures and short sayings that were used to decorate each table as well as the fellowship hall. These pictures/sayings are being compiled in a scrapbook to be given to Brother Marvin as a gift from Riverside's Youth for Christ. Overall, it was an excellent day of fun, food and fellowship honoring two men who are very dear to hearts of Riverside Memorial Holiness Methodist Church.

I would like to conclude this article by sharing three verses, which are meant to encourage and challenge all of our pastors, exhorters, missionaries, and evangelists in our conference:

"And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding." (Jeremiah 3:15 KJV)

"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."(2 Timothy 4:2 KJV)

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15 KJV)

To all the ministers in our conference, I want to say that we may not always show it, but we do appreciate and respect who you are and what you do. Please continue to Preach the Word – tell it like it is, not just what we want to hear!

Riverside Dives Into VBS 2016

During the week of June 20 – 24, Riverside took the plunge into Deep Sea Discovery – otherwise know as VBS 2016. The weeklong VBS averaged 60 participants a night (children, teens, and adults) and challenged each of these participants to "dive deep into God's word". We saw how God is with us wherever we go -- "He knows us, hears us, strengthens us, loves us, and sends us." Our theme verse was Genesis 28:15 -- "And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of." (Genesis 28:15 KJV)

hqdefaultAs an example of God sending us into the world to share with others, one of the week's crafts was a Wordless Bracelet.

The bracelet is similar to the Wordless Book except it uses colored beads, instead of colored pages, to represent several important Bible truths about Salvation – Sin (Black), Blood (Red), Pure (White), Heaven (Yellow), and Grow (Green). Everyone who participated in VBS this year either made or received one of these bracelets. The bracelet was a very appropriate reminder that – "God is with us wherever we go!"
